Set against the harsh landscape of Australia and the grandeur of Rome in the late nineteenth century, Mary tells the story of a great Australian woman Mary Mackillop, who dealt with enormous conflict, rejection and physical pain.
A fiercely independent woman, by her early teens Mary had founded her own order of nuns. The Sisters of St Joseph were dedicated to the education of all people regardless of race or denomination and established a network of refugees, schools and welfare organisations. Mary's work with ex-prisoners, prostitutes and her belief in a fair go for all was highly condemned by the church hierarchy. Her unfailing dedication to this work caused her to be ex-communicated, reviled and almost destroyed.
On October 17th, 2010, Mary MacKillop will be cannonised and become Australia's first recognised Saint.
