THE Australian film based on the true story of an indigenous girl band singing Motown classics, The Sapphires, has been selected as part of the official selection at the upcoming 2012 Cannes Film Festival.
It is the only Australian feature film selected for this year’s
festival and will receive a special gala screening out of competition at
The Palais during the May event.
The precedents are good: both
Strictly Ballroom and The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert
premiered in out of competition gala screenings at Cannes in 1992 and
1994 respectively.
The film stars Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy
and newcomers Shari Sebbens and Miranda Tapsell as four singers
discovered on a remote Aboriginal mission who turned into Australia’s
answer to The Supremes and visited Vietnam to entertain the troops.
Bridesmaids' Chris O’Dowd also stars as the agent who finds the singers.
The Weinstein Company has picked up Wayne Blair's The Sapphires, the Australian film set to screen in Cannes later this Saturday.
Based on a true story, the film depicts four Australian Aboriginal girls who formed all girl group The Sapphires in the 1960s. It was written by Aboriginal playwright Tony Briggs -- whose mother and family members were part of The Sapphires group -- and stars "Bridesmaids" breakout Chris O'Dowd as the band's manager.
The announcement was made today by TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein, COO David Glasser, and Co-SVPs of Acquisitions Negeen Yazdi and Dan Guando.
The film has been chosen as an Official Selection for the 65th Cannes Film Festival and will play on May 19th, which is the first Saturday of the festival.
“THE SAPPHIRES is a rare and special film, and all of us on director Wayne Blair’s team are thrilled to be working with The Weinstein Company which we know will be the very best home for this film,” said Goalpost Film’s Tristan Whalley.
Added Goalpost Pictures’ Rosemary Blight, “Passionate, innovative and creative marketing and distribution is what independent films require to reach an audience. The Weinstein Company is one of the most talented distributors of independent films in the world, and we are thrilled that THE SAPPHIRES is in such great hands. It is a wonderful acknowledgement of the extraordinary work of the cast and crew led so magnificently by director Wayne Blair.”
Said Weinstein, “These girls light up the screen as much as their music lights up the stage. We’re thrilled to bring the stories and music from these sisters to audiences all over the world.”
It is the latest sale on the film to be secured by UK company Goalpost Film following a successful run at the EFM.
Entertainment One has picked up UK and Irish distribution rights to Wayne Blair's Aboriginal girl group story The Sapphires from Goalpost Film, following negotiations at the EFM in Berlin.
It is the latest deal to be finalised by Goalpost on the film - which stars Chris O'Dowd - following a raft of sales in Berlin and before, including to eOne for Canada, Diaphana for France, Lev Films for Israel and Hopscotch for Australia.
The Goalpost Pictures Australia production (the sister company of Goalpost Film in London) is set in the late 1960s and inspired by the true story of a group of four Aboriginal soul singers from a remote community who travel to Vietnam to entertain the troops. A stage musical has already been made of the story.
London-based sales company Goalpost Film has announced sales at the European Film Market in Berlin of THE SAPPHIRES, directed by Wayne Blair, and produced by Goalpost Pictures Australia's Rosemary Blight and Kylie du Fresne.
THE SAPPHIRES, based on the smash-hit stage play of the same name, has sold to France (Diaphana), Israel (Lev Films) and Canada (eOne). This is on top of sales previously secured in Portugal (Lusomundo) and to Cinesky for airlines.
eOne's Hopscotch is the Australian distributor.
Sales are being handled Tristan Whalley from Goalpost Film (UK) which is a sister company to Goalpost Pictures Australia.
Director Maia Horniak will be judging the 2012 Optus180 Project.
Maia won the competition in 2010 and will direct the upcoming Goalpost Pictures romantic comedy feature film MIXTAPE.
Happy holidays everyone! Play safe and all the best wishes for an amazing new year!
From everyone at Goalpost Pictures Australia.

The production is searching around the country for four young Indigenous women, aged 16 - 28, to play the leading roles of the four members of The Sapphires who, in the chaos of 1968, are plucked from the obscurity of a remote Aboriginal mission, branded as Australia's answer to The Supremes, and - grasping the chance of a lifetime - dropped into the jungles of Vietnam to entertain the troops. Based on a remarkable true story, The Sapphires is a triumphant celebration of youthful emotion, family and music.
A casting website has been launched which requires the applicants to upload taped auditions before July 1, 2010. Detailed instructions and song choices are available at www.sapphiresopencall.com.

Opening on May 26th in Sydney is the fabulous stage version of The Sapphires. Goalpost Pictures is currently in development of the feature film adaptation and we encourage one and all to see where it all began. Based on a true story, The Sapphires is a musical with heart, soul and a whole lot of soulful music, that will have you cheering for more.
It is 1969, bombs are dropping on Vietnam and the world is divided into those for and against the war. At the St Kilda's Tiki Club, four sisters in a Supremes cover band from remote Cummeragunga catch the eye of a slick big-city talent scout. Soon there are promises made, and it seems the sisters' dreams of fame, fortune and touring overseas are about to come true. But for these four Koori soul divas from country Victoria, their fans are young soldiers, and ‘overseas' means the war zone in Vietnam.
Written by Tony Briggs and directed by Wesley Enoch The Sapphires is an uplifting story about following your dreams; a passionate blend of the personal and political based on the true story of Tony's mother and aunties' showbiz careers.
The theatre production stars Hollie Andrew, Kylie Farmer, Casey Donavan and Christine Anu. It's not every season that a home grown, heartfelt musical comes to town and if you didn't get the chance to see it in 2005, The Sapphires are a girl group you shouldn't miss.

Frank Perry (Brian Cox) is a lifer; in prison for the rest of his natural born days. He's never had a problem with that: he did the crime; he'll do the time... Until now.
He receives a letter telling him that his only and much loved daughter is critically ill following an overdose. He knows that he must see her and to do that he'll have to escape. But he can't do it alone. A motley crew of younger associates is assembled to enact his plan: Lenny Drake (Joseph Fiennes), Brodie (Liam Cunningham), and Viv Baptista (Seu Jorge). As they prepare to break out Frank's focus is distracted by the arrival of a young con James Lacey (Dominic Cooper) - a reminder of days long lost.
